During a poignant moment on Artemis II mission, astronauts honored the memory of Carroll Taylor Wiseman, the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman, in a tribute that underscored the emotional depth behind the historic journey.
As the spacecraft traveled farther from Earth than any human mission before, the four-member crew—including Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency—paused during a live broadcast on April 6, 2026, to recognize Carroll’s life and legacy.
Speaking during the transmission, Hansen proposed naming a bright, previously unnamed lunar crater “Carroll,” describing it as “a bright spot on the Moon.” The moment was marked by visible emotion among the crew, including Wiseman, as they reflected on the significance of the tribute. The proposed name accompanies another crater designation, “Integrity,” which aligns with the crew’s chosen name for their Orion spacecraft.
Carroll Taylor Wiseman died in 2020 at the age of 46 following a five-year battle with cancer. She is remembered as a devoted mother to the couple’s two daughters and a central figure in her family’s life. Since her passing, Wiseman has continued his work with NASA while raising their children.
The tribute served as a reminder of the personal stories carried into space alongside scientific and exploratory milestones.
